H&S Pogue-Retailed Carved Oak Sideboard - Origin: American, possibly Midwestern Date: Circa 1890-1910 Period/Style: Late Victorian Renaissance Revival Materials: Oak and quarter-sawn oak veneer, brass hardware, and green-lined interior Form: Monumental low-back sideboard or server Description: A monumental American carved and quarter-sawn oak sideboard retaining a fragmentary red paper retail label attributable to The H. & S. Pogue Company of Cincinnati. The broad serving surface is surmounted by a low architectural backsplash extensively carved with figural masks, foliate scrolls, urns, and egg-and-dart molding. Three drawers and four cabinet doors are arranged across the massive lower case, enriched with lion masks, rosettes, fruit and floral pendants, arched panels, geometric moldings, and engaged pilasters. The case rests on substantial bun feet. Label: The fragmentary red paper label is consistent with the Cincinnati retailer The H. & S. Pogue Company and appears to retain portions of the wording THE H. & S. POGUE CO. / FOURTH STREET / CINCINNATI. Dimensions: 53.5 in. H, 81.5 in. W, 24 in. D. Condition: Retains an older polished or refinished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish variation, and wear to the serving top. Age-related shrinkage, joint openings, small chips, and localized repairs or losses are present among the projecting moldings and carved elements. The lower central cabinet retains worn green lining.
