French Renaissance Revival Walnut Bookcase - Origin: France Date: Circa 1880-1900 Period/Style: Renaissance Revival, Henri II Revival Materials: Carved walnut, glass, unidentified secondary woods, and metal hardware Form: Bibliotheque or library bookcase Description: A large French Renaissance Revival carved walnut bibliotheque of architectural form. The projecting molded cornice is surmounted by a pierced trophy crest and a foliate frieze centered by a grotesque mask. Three glazed doors open to a shelved interior and are divided by carved foliate pilasters, with boldly twisted columns defining the outer corners. Lower relief panels present attributes of the arts, including an artist's palette and brushes, above a mask-carved plinth and compressed bun feet. Mark/Label: Retains a partially obscured oval paper label reading GARDE-MEUBLE / 28 Rue de la Paroisse / VERSAILLES / LACROIX-THEVENON, with a painted or inked inventory number 3. Dimensions: 115 in.
