Biedermeier Mahogany Corner Cabinet - Origin: North European, probably North German Date: Circa 1840-1860 Period/Style: Late Empire, Biedermeier Materials: Mahogany and figured mahogany veneer, mixed softwood secondary woods, brass and iron hardware, and paper Form: Two-part standing corner cupboard Description: Fine North European Biedermeier mahogany corner cabinet, probably North German, circa 1840-1860. The tall two-part triangular case has convex doors veneered in richly figured flame mahogany, each flanked by turned columns and opening to a shelved interior. The upper section is surmounted by a molded cornice and finely carved crest incorporating scrolling palmettes and paired flowerhead rosettes. The lower case rests upon a stepped plinth with shaped bracket feet. Remnants of old patterned paper survive on one rear side. Dimensions: 87 in. H, 30 in. W, 27.5 in. D. Condition: Retains an old polished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, stains, finish variation, and edge wear. Veneers exhibit age-related cracks, lifting, and minor localized losses. Backboards have shrinkage separations, scattered holes, abrasions, and old inscriptions. Patterned paper covering on one rear side is fragmentary, stained, torn, and extensively worn.
