Napoleon III Mahogany Indiscret Sofa - Origin: Probably France Date: Circa 1860-1875 Period/Style: French Second Empire, Napoleon III, Rococo Revival taste Materials: Mahogany, mixed secondary woods, later damask upholstery, upholstery buttons, and metal casters Form: Three-seat indiscret or conversation sofa Description: A striking Napoleon III mahogany three-seat indiscret or conversation sofa, probably French, circa 1860-1875. Three deeply tufted seats are arranged in an interlocking trefoil or pinwheel plan beneath continuous serpentine backs and arms. The exposed frame has scrolling end standards, carved flower heads, molded rails, and short cabriole legs fitted with casters. Coral damask upholstery with large foliate decoration emphasizes the sculptural form. Commonly called a hotel sofa. Dimensions: 24 in. H, 53 in. diameter, 15.5 in. seat H. Condition: Old surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, small edge nicks, and darkening. Later coral damask upholstery has light fading, wrinkling, scattered marks, and minor wear.
