Pair Italian Walnut Marble Top Commodes - Origin: Probably Italy Date: Circa 1870-1890 Period/Style: Italian Renaissance Revival with Louis Philippe influence Materials: Walnut and figured walnut veneer, white marble, brass hardware, and pine secondary woods Form: Pair of marble-top bedside commodes Description: A matched pair of probable Italian walnut and figured-walnut-veneered bedside commodes. Each white marble top rests beneath a shaped backsplash centered by a molded circular boss and a small demilune shelf with turned pendant support. A locking frieze drawer surmounts an opposing cabinet door veneered with diagonal borders and a rounded-arch figured panel. Carved bracket details enrich the front stiles, and each shelved cabinet rises on short turned feet. The opposing doors confirm the pair was designed for placement on either side of a bed. Dimensions: 32.5 in. H, 16.5 in. W, 14 in. D, each.
