Signed C. Lee Mahogany Full Tester Bed - Maker: Charles Lee, Manchester, Massachusetts, active 1856-1868 Origin: Manchester, Massachusetts, probably made for the Southern market Date: Circa 1860 Period/Style: American Rococo Revival Materials: Mahogany, figured mahogany veneer, unidentified secondary woods, and later textile lining Form: Full tester bed Description: A fine American Rococo Revival mahogany full tester bed by Charles Lee. The monumental rectangular tester has a deeply molded and figured mahogany-veneered cornice supported by four tall, tapering chamfered posts with molded collars and faceted feet. The shaped headboard is carved with shellwork, scrolling foliage, a central roundel, and pendant fruit above a bookmatched figured mahogany panel. A serpentine footboard with applied foliate ornament and shaped side rails completes the form. The tester is lined in later radially pleated cream-colored fabric centered by a textile rosette. Mark: Stamped C. LEE 1334 to interior wooden components. Dimensions: 106 in. H. Interior mattress opening: 59 in. W, 77 in. L. Condition: Presents attractively with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, minor shrinkage separations, and localized veneer or surface losses consistent with age. Posts exhibit scattered scrapes, dents, finish losses, and areas of discoloration. A small impact loss is visible to the molded tester cornice. The surface appears to have been refreshed or refinished. Later pleated tester fabric displays light toning, minor soiling, and expected wear but appears substantially intact.
