Pottier & Stymus Attrib. Walnut Credenza - Maker: Attributed to Pottier & Stymus Manufacturing Company, active New York, 1859-1910 Origin: New York City Date: Circa 1870-1875 Period/Style: American Renaissance Revival with Neo-Grec influence Materials: Walnut, figured burl walnut veneer, ebonized details, parcel-gilt incised decoration, metal hardware. Form: Credenza or parlor cabinet Description: A fine American Renaissance Revival walnut and burl walnut credenza attributed to Pottier & Stymus. The architectural case has a raised sarcophagus-form upper stage surmounted by a molded top and pierced foliate crest with finials. Projecting side bays incorporate elevated circular shelves on carved standards. The facade is organized by engaged turned columns, gilt-incised pilasters, carved rosette panels, foliate sprays, and a prominent shell-form medallion. A frieze drawer and large central cupboard door open to a shelved interior, with figured burl panels and parcel-gilt geometric and foliate ornament throughout. Dimensions: 52 in. H, 59 in. W, 21.5 in. D. Condition: Presents attractively with scattered scratches, abrasions, dents, finish variation, and rubbing or losses to the parcel-gilt decoration. Small chips, separations, and losses are visible to applied moldings and carved elements, including portions of the elevated side platforms. The upper and side surfaces exhibit wear and scattered marks. The back has extensive abrasions, finish losses, and localized patched or reinforced areas.
