Labeled R.J. Horner Mahogany Screen - Maker: R. J. Horner & Co., New York, active 1886-1915 Origin: New York City Date: Circa 1890-1900 Period/Style: American Renaissance Revival with Baroque Revival influence Materials: Carved mahogany, patterned crimson textile, metal rosettes, and metal hardware. Form: Four-panel folding screen or room divider Description: A fine and rare American Renaissance Revival carved mahogany four-panel folding screen by R. J. Horner & Co. The two tall central panels are crowned by foliate crests and contain pierced reserves carved with paired winged griffins flanking fruit-filled urns. The arched outer panels display related griffins amid scrolling foliage. Four crimson patterned textile panels are gathered in dramatic radiating pleats around central rosettes. Shield-form cartouches, winged grotesques, floral scrollwork, and deeply carved foliate borders enrich the lower panels and shaped aprons throughout. Mark: Retains the original metal label reading R.
