New York Classical Carved Mahogany Table - Origin: Probably New York City Date: Circa 1835-1845 Period/Style: Late American Classical Materials: Mahogany, figured mahogany veneer, and brass casters Form: Drop-leaf breakfast or center table Description: A fine late American Classical carved mahogany drop-leaf table, probably New York. The rectangular figured-mahogany top has two hinged leaves with rounded, subtly shaped corners. Both faces of the apron are deeply carved with paired cornucopia issuing fruit, blossoms, and foliage, flanked by turned pendant drops. The top is raised on a richly carved vase-form standard with waterleaf panels and a gadrooned collar, above four bold acanthus-carved downswept legs terminating in hairy paw feet fitted with brass casters. Dimensions: 30 in. H, 24.5 in. W closed, 56.5 in. W extended, 40.25 in. D. Condition: Presents impressively with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, edge rubbing, and minor chips or losses consistent with age. The top exhibits shrinkage cracks, veneer checking, and scattered surface marks. Minor separations and wear are visible at the leaf edges and hinges. Carving shows occasional small losses and abrasions. Brass casters exhibit oxidation and wear. The surface appears to have been renewed with a French-polished or shellac finish.
