Horner and Company Origin: New York City Date: Circa 1890-1900 Period/Style: American Renaissance Revival Materials: Carved quarter-sawn oak, mirror glass, secondary woods, and metal hardware Form: Mirrored sideboard Description: A labeled American Renaissance Revival quarter-sawn oak sideboard by R.J. Horner and Company, New York City, circa 1890-1900. Constructed in two parts, the upper section features a rectangular mirror beneath an elevated gadrooned gallery, supported by boldly carved winged griffins with scrolling tails. The lower case contains three small drawers above one long drawer and three cabinet doors, including rounded side compartments and a carved central panel. Foliate relief carving, grotesque masks, molded pilasters, and substantial paw feet complete the elaborate composition. Marks: Partial brass label to the reverse reading R.J. Horner and Co., Furniture Makers, 61, 63 and 65 West 23rd Street. Dimensions: 60.5 in. H, 54 in. W, 22 in. D. Condition: Retains a later dark refinished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, uneven coloration, and localized losses throughout. The serving surface has numerous scratches, impressions, and areas of finish disturbance. Scattered shrinkage cracks, separations, small chips, and old repairs are visible, including cracking to the curved lower doors. Mirror plate has spotting, clouding, and silvering deterioration.
