Boston Classical Carved Mahogany Sofa - Origin: Probably Boston, Massachusetts Date: Circa 1830-1835 Period/Style: American Late Classical Materials: Mahogany, figured mahogany veneer, later green striped silk upholstery, brass upholstery tacks, and metal casters. Form: Grecian box sofa Description: A fine American Late Classical carved mahogany sofa, probably Boston, Massachusetts, circa 1830-1835. The low architectural frame has a cylindrical crest rail above a shaped and figured mahogany back rail, padded back, and upholstered arms with matching cylindrical bolsters. Bold arm facings are carved with palmettes, paired volutes, lotus leaves, and floral blocks. The long figured mahogany seat rail is edged with carved rope molding and raised on lotus-carved turned front feet, smaller ring-turned rear feet, and casters. Dimensions: 31 in. H, 82 in. W, 20.5 in. D, 19 in. seat H. Condition: Retains an old polished, likely refinished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, darkening, and minor color variation. Carved elements exhibit rubbing, small edge losses, and age-related seams. The cylindrical crest rail has a visible joint or seam near the center.
