Pair Rosewood Marble-Top Bedside Cabinets - Origin: Continental, probably French Date: Circa 1870-1890 Period/Style: Rococo Revival Materials: Rosewood and rosewood veneer, white marble, pine and other secondary woods, brass hardware, and metal casters Form: Pair of bedside cabinets or nightstands Description: A fine pair of Continental Rococo Revival rosewood bedside cabinets, probably French. Each narrow architectural case has a white marble top beneath a tall molded splashboard crowned by pierced rocaille carving and fitted with a small projecting candle shelf. The lower case contains a frieze drawer above a paneled cupboard door applied with bold carved foliate scrollwork, opening to a shelved interior. Brass pulls, rounded front corners, molded plinth bases, and small casters complete the unusually tall matched form. Dimensions: Each 56 in. H, 19 in. W, 13.5 in. D. Condition: Present attractively with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, veneer checking, small chips, and age-related separations. Marble tops exhibit surface marks, discoloration, edge wear, and minor chips. Brass hardware has oxidation and wear. Drawer interiors and cupboard shelves show staining and abrasions. Rear surfaces exhibit extensive scratches, finish loss, old holes, and evidence of mounting or reinforcement to the tall splashboards. One lower rear foot or corner has a visible loss.
