C. Lee Attrib. Mahogany 3/4 Tester Bed - Maker: Attributed to Charles Lee, active Manchester, Massachusetts, 1856-1868 Origin: Manchester, Massachusetts, probably made for the New Orleans or Southern market Date: Circa 1856-1868 Period/Style: American Rococo Revival with Gothic Revival detail Materials: Mahogany and mahogany veneer, pink moire-patterned textile, fringe, and metal hardware Form: Three-quarter tester bed Description: A fine American Rococo Revival carved mahogany three-quarter tester bed attributed to Charles Lee of Manchester, Massachusetts. The serpentine tester has a gadrooned border, carved crest, urn finials, and radiating pleated textile underside centered by a floral rosette. Tall faceted rear posts flank a shaped headboard carved with shellwork, fruit, flowers, and scrolling foliage above Gothic-pointed and molded panels. Sweeping side rails join a low shaped footboard with carved cartouches and monumental urn-form footposts. The attribution rests upon close design and construction parallels with documented stamped Lee bedsteads produced for the New Orleans market. Dimensions: 123 in. H overall from floor to top of crown. Interior mattress opening 62 in. W, 77.5 in. L. Condition: Presents impressively with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, surface variation, minor shrinkage, and small chips or losses consistent with age. The inner surfaces of the side rails exhibit heavier abrasions, finish loss, and evidence of prior assembly or repairs. Carved ornament shows scattered edge wear. The dark surface appears to have been cleaned or renewed. The pink moiré-patterned tester and rear textile appear later and remain unusually intact, with minor fading, creasing, fringe wear, and isolated pulls. Dimensions: 94 x 62 in
