Wardrobe - Maker: Attributed to Mitchell & Rammelsberg Furniture Company Origin: Cincinnati, Ohio Date: Circa 1865-1875 Period/Style: American Rococo Revival Materials: Mahogany and mahogany veneer, highly figured maple veneer, poplar and other secondary woods, mirror glass, brass hardware, and metal casters Form: Double-door mirrored wardrobe or armoire Description: A monumental American Rococo Revival carved mahogany wardrobe attributed to Mitchell & Rammelsberg of Cincinnati. The serpentine crest is centered by a deeply carved scallop shell above layered C-scrolls, blossoms, and foliage. Twin full-length mirrored doors, joined by carved foliate appliques, open to a finely fitted interior lined in richly figured maple and divided between adjustable shelving and a hanging compartment. A broad serpentine-front drawer rests above a shaped apron and four boldly carved paw feet fitted with casters. The attribution rests on the monumental scale, sectional factory construction, sophisticated figured-maple interior, paired mirrored doors, sculptural base, and repeated factory stencil. Marks: Stenciled 1801 twice on the rear. The number appears to be a factory pattern, inventory, or assembly designation. Dimensions: 94 in. H, 65.5 in. W, 23 in. D. Condition: Presents impressively with scattered scratches, abrasions, edge wear, finish variation, shrinkage separations, and minor chips or losses consistent with age. Carved ornament exhibits scattered rubbing and possible minor repairs. The figured interior shows staining, shelf wear, and abrasions. The drawer has age-related wear and localized edge losses around the hand-cut dovetails. Backboards exhibit scratches, old holes, and minor separations.
