Attributed Hook Salem Dressing Bureau - Maker: Attributed to William Hook Origin: Salem, Massachusetts Date: Circa 1810-1820 Period/Style: American Late Federal, Salem School Materials: Mahogany, highly figured mahogany veneer, pumpkin pine secondary wood, brass hardware, and metal locks Form: Bowfront dressing bureau with two-drawer superstructure Description: An exceptional American Late Federal mahogany dressing bureau attributed to William Hook, Salem, Massachusetts, circa 1810-1820. The gently bowed two-piece case has a set-back superstructure containing two shallow drawers above four graduated long drawers, their fronts veneered with dramatically bookmatched figured mahogany. Outset front columns combine closely spaced reeding, bold spiral turning, and ring-turned tapering feet. A shaped scalloped skirt, brass rosette pulls, and escutcheons complete the facade. Broad pine backboards and finely dovetailed drawers retain remarkably clean, almost untouched, warm pumpkin-pine interiors. Dimensions: 46 in. H, 42 in. W, 20 in. D. Condition: Retains an old polished, likely refinished exterior surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, darkening. The top and projecting case surfaces have marks and edge wear. Figured veneers exhibit minor shrinkage and small cracks.. Brass rosette pulls and escutcheons appear period.
