Pair French First Empire Bergeres - Origin: France Date: Circa 1805-1815 Period/Style: French First Empire Materials: Mahogany, figured mahogany veneer, mixed secondary woods, later woven silk upholstery, and brass upholstery nails Form: Pair of upholstered bergeres Description: A fine pair of French First Empire carved mahogany bergeres, circa 1805-1815. Each has an incurved rectangular back and enclosed upholstered sides above a loose seat cushion. Downswept arms terminate in carved volutes and are supported by rectangular mahogany uprights ornamented with anthemion and foliate carving. The bowed seat rails are raised on curved front supports and sabre rear legs. Later green silk upholstery woven with gold laurel wreaths and stars complements the strong Napoleonic design vocabulary. Dimensions: 36 in. H and 37 in. H, 24 in. W, 18 in. D, 17 in. seat H. One loose seat cushion has visible soiling and staining, as photographed. The chairs have minor dimensional and construction variations, including a one-inch difference in overall height.
