American Karpen Rococo Revival Rosewood Sofa - Origin: American, S. Karpen & Bros. Date: Circa 1880-1890 Period/Style: American Rococo Revival Materials: Carved rosewood, secondary woods, and later upholstery Form: Parlor sofa Description: Monumental American Rococo Revival carved rosewood sofa, circa 1880-1890. The deeply tufted serpentine back is enclosed by a broad molded frame crowned at each end by pierced floral and foliate crests. Rolled open arms flank the shaped seat above a deeply carved serpentine rail centered by opposing acanthus scrolls. Substantial foliate-carved cabriole legs terminate in heavy volute feet. The unusually robust framing, bold carving, and generous scale give the sofa a distinctive sculptural presence. Offered separately from its companion chairs in Lot 97. Dimensions: 50 in. H, 77 in. W, 22.5 in. D, 20.5 in. seat H.
