American Karpen Rococo Rosewood Parlor Chairs - Origin: American, S. Karpen & Bros. Date: Circa 1880-1890 Period/Style: American Rococo Revival Materials: Carved rosewood, secondary woods, and later upholstery Form: Armchair and side chair Description: Two companion American Rococo Revival carved rosewood parlor chairs, circa 1880-1890, comprising one armchair and one side chair. Each has a tall balloon-form tufted back enclosed by a broad molded frame beneath a pierced floral and foliate crest. Deeply carved serpentine rails and substantial foliate-carved cabriole legs terminating in heavy volute feet give the chairs a bold sculptural character. The armchair has padded open arms with rolled handrests. From the suite represented by the sofa in Lot 96. Armchair dimensions: 52 in. H, 28.5 in. W, 21 in. D, 18 in. seat H.
