Attr.Thomas Day Dressing Bureau - Maker: Attributed to Thomas Day (1801-1861) Origin: Milton, North Carolina Date: Circa 1850 Period/Style: Late Classical Materials: Figured mahogany and mahogany veneer, white marble, mirror glass, metal casters, and secondary woods Form: Dressing bureau with mirror Description: Attributed to Thomas Day (1801-1861), Milton, North Carolina, circa 1850. The Late Classical dressing bureau is veneered in richly figured mahogany and fitted with two glove drawers flanking an inset white marble dressing slab. A monumental pivoting mirror rises within a fluid pierced frame of lyre-like scrolls, incised rosettes, and foliate carving. The case has a projecting cushion-front upper drawer above three graduated hand-dovetailed drawers, with rounded pilasters, paneled sides, shaped bracket feet, and casters. Provenance: West Point, MS greek revival estate. Dimensions: 87 in. H, 43 in. W, 20 in. D. Condition: Appears structurally substantial and presents very well. The exterior appears to retain an old refinished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, minor veneer nicks, shrinkage, and other age-related wear. Marble has light staining and surface wear.
