French Louis XV Marquetry Vitrine - Origin: France Date: Circa 1880 Period/Style: Belle Epoque, Louis XV Revival Materials: Mixed exotic and fruitwood veneers, floral marquetry, gilt-metal mounts, glass, fabric lining, and secondary woods Form: Vitrine or display cabinet Description: A French Louis XV Revival marquetry vitrine, circa 1880, having a shaped serpentine cornice above a single door fitted with a conforming glazed panel. Curved glazed sides and two glass shelves provide an open display interior. The lower door panel is finely decorated with floral marquetry within a scrolling cartouche, complemented by matched veneers, darkwood stringing, and cast gilt-metal foliate mounts. The shaped case is raised on slender cabriole legs ending in mounted feet. A later interior light provides additional illumination. Dimensions: 72.5 in. H, 29 in. W, 13.5 in. D. Condition: Retains an old polished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, shrinkage lines, veneer cracking, lifting, and small localized losses. Marquetry exhibits minor age-related separations and surface wear. Gilt-metal mounts have rubbing, oxidation, darkening, and scattered losses to the gilt finish. Interior lining has expected wear and discoloration. Glass panels and shelves intact. The interior lighting is a later addition and was tested and operational at the time of cataloging.
