Pair French Walnut Griffin Bedside Cabinets - Origin: Probably France Date: Circa 1880-1900 Period/Style: Renaissance Revival in the Henri II taste Materials: Walnut and walnut veneer, brass hardware, and unidentified secondary woods Form: Pair of bedside cabinets or commodes Description: A substantial matched pair of probable French Renaissance Revival walnut bedside cabinets in the Henri II taste. Each has a molded rectangular wood top above a concealed frieze drawer fitted with a brass pull. The opposing cabinet doors are carved in mirror image with scrolling foliage, flower heads, and winged griffin-like beasts. Full-height spiral-turned columns flank the doors, while deeply stepped moldings, broad plinth bases, and bun feet complete the architectural design. The pair retains locks, decorative brass escutcheons, and keys. Dimensions: 39 in. H, 26.5 in. W, 20.5 in. D, each.
