S.G. & P. Stein Iowa Cherry Drop-Leaf Table - Maker: S. G. and P. Stein Origin: Muscatine, Iowa Date: Circa 1870-1880 Period/Style: American Victorian, Midwestern Materials: Cherry, unidentified secondary woods, metal hinges, and casters Form: Double drop-leaf dining or breakfast table Description: A fine labeled Iowa cherry double drop-leaf table manufactured by S. G. and P. Stein of Muscatine, circa 1870-1880. The narrow rectangular center section is flanked by two generous hinged leaves, creating a compact table when closed and a nearly square dining surface when extended. The cherry frame is raised on four slender ring-turned legs ending in shaped feet and metal casters. An unusually well-preserved ink-stamped manufacturers label identifies the Muscatine factory and West Second Street warerooms. Dimensions: 29 in. H, 20.5 in. W closed, 42.5 in. W extended, 47 in. D. Condition: Retains an old polished, likely refinished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear, darkening, and color variation. The top and leaves exhibit surface marks, minor shrinkage, slight separation or unevenness along the hinged joints, and small edge imperfections. Legs have scattered scuffs and finish wear. Casters appear period. The ink-stamped makers label is faded, rubbed, and partially obscured but remains substantially legible. Leaf supports and hinges operating and overal structurally stable.
