Belter & Co., New York, circa 1858-1865. The diminutive American Rococo Revival parlor chair is built around a compound-curved laminated rosewood dish back, its broad convex shell enclosing an upholstered oval panel framed by opposing scrolls. A serpentine seat rail rises on cabriole legs terminating in brass casters. The double-curved pressed-work back relates directly to Belter's patented method of forming laminated staves into spherical or spheroidal furniture components. Dimensions: 35.5 in. H, 16.5 in. W, 17 in. D; seat height 16 in.
