Ronay, Hungarian, 19th century, genre painting of a barefoot young street musician seated in a rustic interior. Wearing a straw hat and tattered clothing, the boy lights a clay pipe while his violin and bow rest prominently on the floor before him. The expressive figure is modeled in warm earth tones against a shadowed architectural background. Signed J. L. Ronay lower left and presented in a giltwood frame with an engraved artist plaque. Dimensions: 37 in. H, 30.5 in. W overall. Age-related craquelure, scattered scratches and abrasions, small paint losses, surface irregularities, and areas of possible old restoration are visible. Varnish exhibits unevenness and surface grime. Frame has rubbing, losses, and finish wear. Rear paper dust cover is extensively torn, taped, and deteriorated.
