French Figural Spelter Mantel Clock - Origin: France Date: Circa 1890-1910 Period/Style: Belle Epoque Materials: Patinated and polychromed spelter, brass, enamel, glass, and brecciated pink marble Description: French Belle Epoque figural mantel clock, circa 1890-1910. The patinated spelter group depicts a seated young woman holding a quill or paper beside a winged putto reading a newspaper inscribed LE JOUR. The drum-form case encloses a floral-painted white enamel dial with Arabic numerals, quarter-minute markings, gilt pierced hands, and the place inscription Montescourt. The round brass two-train movement strikes on a bell. Mounted on a brecciated pink marble plinth with gilt-metal foliate feet. Dimensions: 14 in. H, 17.5 in. W, 6 in. D. Condition: Patinated metal surfaces exhibit rubbing, scratches, oxidation, accumulated residue, and scattered finish loss. Enamel dial has visible hairlines, scratches, discoloration, and small imperfections. Marble plinth has numerous cracks, filled fractures, edge chips, losses, discoloration, and extensive old repairs, especially along the rear and lower edges. Rear brass cover has finish loss.
