Large Dehua Blanc-de-Chine Standing Buddha - Maker: Unidentified Dehua workshop; bearing Xu Yunlin-type seals Origin: Dehua, Fujian Province, China Date: Late Qing dynasty to Republic period, circa 1900-1940 Period/Style: Chinese Dehua blanc-de-Chine Materials: Glazed porcelain Form: Standing Buddhist devotional figure Description: A large Chinese Dehua blanc-de-Chine porcelain figure of a standing Buddha, modeled with tightly curled hair and elongated earlobes, wearing layered robes falling in deeply modeled folds. The right hand is raised in a Buddhist teaching gesture while the left supports a lotus blossom. A Buddhist swastika, an ancient symbol of auspiciousness and spiritual well-being, appears upon the chest. The figure stands upon a double-lotus pedestal with a molded petal-form base. The reverse bears a double-gourd impressed seal and an additional square workshop seal associated with the Xu Yunlin tradition. The seals are recorded without an unqualified artist attribution because related marks were employed by later Dehua workshops. Dimensions: 23.5 in. H; 8 in. diameter. Literature/Reference: P. J.
