Chinese Blue-and-White Porcelain Jar - Maker: Unidentified Chinese manufacture Origin: China Date: Late Qing dynasty, circa 1880-1900 Period/Style: Chinese Qing dynasty Materials: Underglaze-blue decorated porcelain and carved hardwood Form: Covered storage or ginger jar Description: A Chinese late Qing dynasty blue-and-white porcelain jar of rounded, tapering form, painted in underglaze cobalt with a large flowering peony issuing from an ornamental jardiniere or scholar's rock, accompanied by leafy branches, additional blossoms, and a hovering butterfly. Portions of the reverse remain undecorated, revealing the pale blue-white glaze and scattered kiln speckling. Fitted with a later carved hardwood cover surmounted by a bud-form finial. Dimensions: 11.5 in. H overall; 8 in. diameter.
