American Classical Mahogany Work Table - Origin: American, probably Northeastern United States Date: Circa 1830-1845 Period/Style: American Classical Materials: Mahogany and mahogany veneer, secondary woods, and glass Form: Drop-leaf work or sewing table Description: American Classical mahogany work or sewing table, circa 1830-1845. The compact rectangular case expands by two rounded drop leaves and contains three graduated bow-front drawers fitted with faceted glass pulls. The case rests on an urn-form central standard deeply carved with acanthus, rising from a shaped quadripartite platform. Four downswept legs enriched with foliate carving terminate in hairy paw feet. Hand-cut dovetailing and unfinished secondary woods visible in the drawers support the period construction. Dimensions: 31 in. H, 17 in. W, 17 in. D closed. Drop leaves exhibit surface wear and slight separation at the hinge lines. Drawer interiors and sides show age-related wear. Faceted glass pulls are replacements.
