John Jelliff Pair Armchairs - Maker: Attributed to John Jelliff and Company (1813-1893) Origin: Newark, New Jersey Date: Circa 1870 Period/Style: American Renaissance Revival Materials: Carved walnut, burl-walnut veneers, contrasting wood inlay, and later damask upholstery Form: Pair of armchairs Description: Pair of American Renaissance Revival walnut armchairs, attributed to John Jelliff and Company of Newark, New Jersey, circa 1870. Each has an oval button-tufted back beneath a pierced crest centered by an individualized relief-carved helmeted classical profile. Burl-walnut banding and contrasting foliate inlay ornament the frames, arms, and shaped aprons, raised on ring-turned legs and upholstered in coordinating gold floral damask. Originally part of a matching three-piece parlor suite; see the sofa offered as Lot 132.
