Five Signed Paul Jacoulet Surimono Prints - Artist: Paul Jacoulet (French, 1896-1960) Origin: Japan Date: Circa 1948-1953 Medium: Color woodblock prints on paper Description: Group of five miniature Japanese color woodblock prints by Paul Jacoulet, from the artist self-published surimono Christmas and New Year card series, circa 1948-1953. Each appears to be signed by Jacoulet within the image above or adjacent to an individual pictorial artist seal. The inspected example, Chagrin d Amour, bears an apparent hand-applied signature above the butterfly seal, together with a separate printed Paul Jacoulet credit in the lower margin. Subjects comprise Decembre, Japon; Les Jades, Mandchoukouo; Chagrin d Amour, Kusaie, Est Carolines; Souvenirs d Autrefois, Japon; and Orchidees Blanches, Jaluit. Individually framed under glass with purple and gold floral brocade mats, gilt liners, and black-painted wood frames. Dimensions: Visible prints approximately 6 in. H, 4 in. W each. Condition: Prints retain generally strong color with scattered light toning, fading, and minor surface imperfections visible through the glass. Brocade mats exhibit scattered fading, discoloration, pulls, and wear. Frames have scratches, abrasions, finish loss, and small edge nicks. Later paper backings have staining, tears, punctures, tape or adhesive residue, and old dealer and collector labels. One example from Lot 138 was examined out of frame.
