American Classical Mahogany Card Table - Origin: Probably New York Date: Circa 1835-1845 Period/Style: American Late Classical Materials: Mahogany, figured mahogany veneer, pine secondary wood, and brass hardware Form: Rotating fold-over card or games table Description: American Late Classical mahogany card table, probably New York, circa 1835-1845. The rectangular rotating fold-over top is veneered with book-matched crotch mahogany and opens to a square playing surface above a concealed storage well. A deep cushion-molded frieze with figured mahogany veneer rests on paired pierced lyre-form standards above a molded plinth. The quadripartite base has shaped sweeping legs ending in brass casters. Dimensions: 29 in. H, 35.5 in. W. Condition: Retains an old refinished surface with scattered scratches, abrasions, stains, fading, and finish variation. Both halves of the top exhibit pronounced shrinkage cracks, veneer splits, repaired areas, and surface irregularities. Scattered veneer lifting, edge losses, and infill are present. Old glue, structural repairs, and joint separation are visible beneath the table and around the pedestal and base. Storage well has staining, scratches, residue, and edge wear.
