Pair of ‘Phoenix’ jade figurines, Han dynasty - Pair of jade “Phoenix” figures, Han dynastyA pair of figures carved in pale-green to yellowish-green jade, representing two phoenixes (fènghuáng) facing each other. Both pieces show a symmetrical treatment, with upright bodies, folded wings and curved tails stylised with openwork. The carving combines smooth volumes and incised lines that suggest feathers and scales. Supported on quadrangular bases also made of jade, the figures show lower perforations that could indicate decorative mounting or symbolic function in a ritual or funerary context.
