White jade pendant ‘Taotie Mask’, Shang dynasty - Important ritual plaque of white jade, carved in relief. The piece is dominated by the representation of a Taotie mask, a motif associated with protection. The carving shows large circular eyes, stylised horns and a broad smile revealing sharp teeth.
