”Saint Anthony with the Christ Child”. Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture with “estofado” technique. 17th – 18th century Colonial School. Mexico or Peru. - Imposing and large image of the saint, carrying the Christ Child in his arms. The marvellous polychroming achieved on the skin tones, so which and shiny, is characteristic of the Viceroy period. The image is similar to the also almost life-size figure of Saint Dominic which is kept at the Museo Amparo in Mexico. Also, in the Museo del Virreinato in Mexico, there is a sculpture collection which includes an image of Saint Anthony of Padua dated in the 16th century, which also has similarities to this one.
