17th – 18th century Colonial. Mexico. - “Our Lady of Guadalupe from Extremadura” Oil on canvas. With a period carved, gilded and silver frame. Canvas measurements: 57 x 43,5 cm. Frame measurements: 79 x 65 cm. One of the images most venerated by the Spanish “conquistadores” was that of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Extremadura, a 12th century carving belonging to the series of black Madonnas made at that time in Occidental Europe. The troops that disembarked in Latin America brought numerous religious images with them as talismans to protect them from danger. As this Madonna was one of the most venerated since the Reconquista, devotion to Our Lady of Extremadura arrived to Latin America in the form of engravings, altarpieces and canvases that depicted the Virgin of Miracles, and were known as ”vero retrato” (true portraits).
