The subject of the portrait, Juan Madrid de Quiñones, was born on 19th November 1756, in Peñafiel, Palencia (Spain). He moved to New Spain and settled in Tzinancatepec, in Toluca. He was a very important character, as is evident in the fact that the main street of the town bears his name, as the handwritten note on the back indicates in its biographical details of the subject.
