Vintage Ohio River Sand Company Wooden Advertising Thermometer - 5.5”x-20” - An industrial advertising thermometer for the Ohio River Sand Company of Louisville, Kentucky. The piece consists of a vertical wooden board with a rounded top, painted white with black stenciled lettering. The upper portion displays the company name Ohio River Sand Company Incorporated, followed by its location at the Brook and Fulton Streets elevator and yards. It includes the telephone designation Both Phones 1871. The thermometer features a central glass tube filled with red spirit liquid, held in place by two stamped metal brackets. The temperature scale is printed on the board, ranging from 120 degrees Fahrenheit to 20 degrees below zero. Textual markers include Freezing at 40 degrees and Zero at the 0-degree line. The bottom of the board lists products such as Washed River Sand, Roofing Gravel, Concrete Gravel, and Crushed Granite. The thermometer bulb is housed under a perforated metal protective cover. Mounting holes are located at the top and bottom center. The reverse of the board is unpainted and shows natural wood grain and weathering.
