American Painted Pine Blanket Chest with Faux-Grain Decoration, Mid-19th Century 22”X48”X28” - FOR PICK UP OR SHIPPING ONLY: This blanket chest is constructed of pine in a traditional six-board style. The exterior surfaces on the front and sides feature an elaborate faux-grain paint decoration, a classic technique in 19th-century American folk art used to simulate the appearance of highly figured woods. The finish is executed in a rhythmic pattern using ochre and dark brown tones. The chest has a hinged, overhanging lid with a simple molded edge. The interior is unfinished and contains a lidded till box on the left side for storing small items. The piece is supported by four dark-stained, turned bun feet. Hardware includes iron butt hinges and an inset iron lock. The keyhole is cut directly into the front panel without an external escutcheon. No maker marks, signatures, or labels were observed on the piece. The back panel remains in its original unpainted state.
