19th Century American Salt-Glazed Stoneware Storage Jar 10”X14” - This 19th-century American stoneware storage jar is of cylindrical form, featuring a slightly tapered neck and a thick, rounded, overhanging rim. The exterior is finished in a traditional gray-to-tan salt glaze exhibiting a pronounced orange peel texture. The interior is coated with a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze. A faint, incised mark resembling a cross is located on the upper shoulder area, which likely served as a tally or capacity indicator during the firing process. No maker's stamp or decorative cobalt painting is present. The jar shows evidence of its industrial production, including various kiln scars and iron spots throughout the body.
