Anton Melcher Louisville Kentucky Ovoid Salt Glazed Stoneware Jug (Handle Appears Repaired) 7”X11.5” - This ovoid form salt glazed stoneware jug was produced by the pottery of Anton Melcher in Louisville, Kentucky during the mid to late 19th century. The jug features a single hand applied strap handle and a simple, slightly flared collar at the mouth. An impressed three line maker mark is located on the shoulder, reading A. MELCHER / MANUFACTURERS / LOUISVILLE, KY. The exterior is finished with a traditional salt glaze, which has produced a characteristic orange peel texture and a coloration ranging from light gray to tan. The body exhibits scattered iron spots, often called fry, which are typical results of the firing process.
