A. Melcher and Company Louisville Kentucky Salt Glazed Stoneware Jar 6”X10” - This mid-19th century salt-glazed stoneware jar was manufactured by A. Melcher and Company in Louisville, Kentucky. The vessel features a cylindrical body that tapers slightly at the shoulder, leading to a wide, everted, flat-topped rim. A single incised line encircles the shoulder just below the rim. The exterior is finished with a traditional salt glaze, resulting in a mottled gray and tan surface with a characteristic orange peel texture. The upper shoulder is impressed with a three-line maker mark that reads: A. MELCHER & Co. / MANUFACTURER / LOUISVILLE KY. The interior is coated with a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze. Based on the maker mark, this piece was produced during the firm's period of operation in Louisville, approximately 1854 to 1875.
