Elisabeth Yeates, Alphabet and Verse Needlework Sampler, 1841 (Signed) 9”X17.5” - This 1841 needlework sampler is worked in cross-stitch with colored threads on a natural linen ground. The composition is organized into horizontal registers, beginning with several rows of alphabets in varying uppercase and lowercase styles, followed by a sequence of numerals. A decorative border featuring an interlocking vine with acorns and stylized floral motifs separates the alphabets from a four-line moral verse. The verse reads: Honor thy Mother / For her loving arms / Secured thee from / A Thousand harms. The lower section of the sampler bears a literal inscription identifying the maker: Elisabeth Yeates / 12 Years old 1841. The piece is presented in a mitered wooden frame with a blue-painted inner channel and an outer border decorated with a molded foliate pattern. The verso is finished with a cardboard backing secured by clear tape and retains a simple hanging wire. No gallery labels or additional inscriptions are present on the reverse.
