Bidspirit auction | Two Antique American Stoneware Jugs
Two Antique American Stoneware Jugs in Salt and Albany Slip Glazes (Largest 6”X11”) - Two 19th-century American stoneware jugs of varying sizes and finishes. The larger vessel is an ovoid-bodied jug featuring a rounded shoulder and a single applied strap handle. It is finished in a tan salt glaze with prominent natural iron-spot mottling and fly ash pitting from the firing process; the interior of the spout is coated in a dark brown slip. The smaller vessel is a rounded jug with a single applied strap handle, entirely coated in a dark, glossy brown slip glaze, consistent with Albany-type slip, which displays slight iridescent qualities in certain lighting. The smaller jug is accompanied by an aged cork stopper. Both items lack visible maker marks, capacity stamps, or cobalt blue ornamentation.
