German Westerwald Salt Glazed Stoneware Cobalt Decorated 4 Liter Storage Jar - A salt-glazed stoneware storage jar or crock attributed to the Westerwald region of Germany. The vessel features a cylindrical form that tapers toward the base, a slightly flared rim, and two applied lug handles. The exterior is decorated with hand-painted cobalt blue slip, including stylized foliate or feather spray motifs on the front and back. Two horizontal blue bands encircle the upper body beneath the rim, with a single band near the base. The handles are accented with blue dabs. Beneath one handle, the jar bears an incised capacity mark of 4 L. followed by a terminal period, indicating a 4-liter capacity. The presence of metric capacity markings is characteristic of German stoneware produced for the export market in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Height: 10 inches Rim Diameter: 7.75 inches.
