Seutter's c.1730 ”India Orientalis” Decorative Map of South-East Asia, Original Colour, Allegorical Cartouche - This decorative map, India Orientalis cum Adjacentibus Insulis Nova Delineatione ob oculos posita, by Matthäus Seutter, was published in Augsburg c.1730. It covers a vast region from India to the southern coastline of Japan, including the northern coastline of Australia, still connected to New Guinea by the Carpentaria Sea. The map is rich with over thirty named features. The elaborate title cartouche has two distinct themes: on the left, a missionary converts the natives, and on the right, natives offer exotic gifts like ivory and coral to a personification of Europe, while Neptune gestures to the sea, symbolizing European dominance. Ideal for collectors of maps of the Far East, South-East Asia, and the East Indies, as well as 18th-century cartography. Condition: A good example with a strong impression and original colouring. Size: 49 x 57.5 cm (19.3 x 22.6 inches).
