The Towne of Pomeiooc: A 1590 Engraving by Theodor de Bry - This historic engraving, The Towne of Pomeiooc, is one of the most celebrated depictions of early Native American life in the New World. Created by Theodor de Bry in 1590 after John White’s 1585 watercolour Indian Village of Pomeiooc, it was first published in de Bry’s Latin edition of Thomas Harriot’s A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia. The engraving provides a detailed view of a Native American settlement located between Wyesocking Bay and Lake Landing, North Carolina, as designated on de Bry’s map Americae Pars Nunc Virginia Dicta. John White’s map La Virginea Pars places Pomeiooc closer to modern-day Lake Mattamuskeet. Annotated by Harriot and engraved by de Bry, this print combines ethnographic accuracy with artistic beauty, showcasing the architecture, daily life, and culture of the indigenous inhabitants.
