Pair of Maps by Coronelli, Planisfero del Mondo Nuovo & Vecchio, c.1693 - This remarkable pair of maps by Vincenzo Coronelli, titled ”Planisfero del Mondo Nuovo Descritto” and ”Planisfero del Mondo Vecchio Descritto, ” were published circa 1693 as part of Coronelli's Atlante Veneto. The ”New World” map features Abel Tasman's discoveries in Australia, California as an island, and includes the names of territories such as Stretto d'Anian, Terra di Iesso, and Giaponi, along with the American west dominated by Nuovo Mexico. In the Pacific, portions of New Zealand, Van Diemen's Land, Carpentaria, and New Guinea are depicted. The ”Old World” map shows Europe, Asia, and Africa, with elegant engravings and decorative elements. Coronelli, one of the most prominent mapmakers and publishers of his time, designed these maps with the most up-to-date cartographic information. The maps are from the Atlante Veneto, a major continuation of Blaeu’s Atlas Maior, and reflect Coronelli’s role as official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic.
