Sefer HaIttur. Venice 1608. First Edition. Signature and Glosses of Rabbi Yosef Khalfon Attiah of Damascus.

Halachic Book authored by Rabbi Isaac ben Abba Mari, of Marseilles, located in the Provence (Southern France), in the 12th Century.

This book encompasses Halachic principles on family and monetary matters, laws of the holidays, some of the laws of Kashrut among other topics. It is mainly based on the Babylonian Rabbis rulings. It sheds great light on their principles on subjects found in the book.

Sefer HaIttur is often quoted in latter generations’ Halachic literature. Many sections of Shulchan Aruch were written considering his approach. Despite its tremendous importance, this book was printed only very few times, with many inaccuracies.
Rabbi Isaac ben Abba Mari was born in 1119 and passed away in 1193, the same year that he finished his composition. He served as Rabbi in Marseilles. Rabbi Isaac is better known in reference to his magnum opus, and usually referred to as “Ba’al HaIttur”. Others refer to Rabbi Isaac as “Ba’al HaDibrot” on account of his work “Aseret HaDibrot” which is appended to Sefer HaIttur.

This copy features the signature of Rabbi Yosef Khalfon Attiah, Rabbi in Damascus, as well as a number of glosses inside.
