The Famous Venice Haggadah. With many woodcut illustrations, and the commentary 'Tzli Aish'. Hebrew and Yiddish. Venice 1663.

The Venice Haggadah of 1663, printed in the sacred tongue, and in the language of the Ashkenazim [Yiddish] "with many illustrations of the signs and wonders that were performed for our ancestors in Egypt, at the sea and in the desert."

Includes the commentary "Tzli Aish" by the highly esteemed Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh of Modena (Leon Modena, 1571-1648), a Venetian rabbi, cantor, teacher, author and polemicist.

The Haggadah follows the Venetian edition of 1629 [with slight variation] and was issued in three editions: Italian [in Hebrew letters], Ashkenazi language [Yiddish], and Sephardi language [Ladino].

Each page of this Haggadah is framed by two architectural columns supporting a pediment. A woodcut illustration from the text appears in the lower half of the page (and at times in the upper section as well). The visual layout of this Haggadah was truly groundbreaking, as from the time of its publication onward, its format became the accepted standard for illustrated Haggadot.

A large number of impressive woodcuts adorn the famous Venice Haggadah, showing both biblical episodes related to the Passover story and contemporary scenes of Jews preparing for and celebrating the holiday.
