Amsterdam Chumash, 1749. Final Edition with Rabbi Shimon Aushenburg HaLevi’s Commentary. Impressive Copy.

Five Books of the Torah with Targum Onkelus, and Rashi’s commentary, along with the 5 Megillot with Tirgum Sheni On Megillat Esther. Includes the explanation of the great elucidator, Rabbi David Kimchi, about whom it was said; ‘If there is no flour (kemach) there is no Torah…”

Rabbi Shimon Aushenburg lived in Frankfurt am Main, and subsequently in Jerusalem. He passed away in 1598. His commentary ‘Devek Tov’ was first published in 1587, (Johann di Gara printers, Venice.) This is a rare copy of the final edition of this prominent commentary ‘Devek Tov’ as there are no known subsequent editions of this book.

Unique and beautiful copperplate engravings of a deer and a snake, decorate the title page along with the words” “And you shall gaze at the copper snake and remain alive: Run like a deer.” Underneath appears an illustration of a Levite washing a Kohen’s hands, likely since the printers were a Levite family – Rabbi Hertz Levi Ofeh and his son-in-law Kossman.

Original, antique, leather binding with artistic embossing. Most beautiful copy.
